December: Christmas Traditions That Don't Cost A Dime.
Christmas traditions are supposed to be generational, meaningful, and fun every time they are done. Here are a few Christmas traditions that can easily be incorporated into your holiday season AND you can do them every year no matter what because they cost little to no money.
- Decorating Together: Use old decorations or make new ones from items around the house.
- Christmas Movie Marathon: Watch holiday movies you already own or that are available on free streaming services. My brother and I watched Miracle on 34th Street every year.
- Baking Day: Make holiday cookies or treats using ingredients you already have. My mother-in-love and I use to make over 200 cookies every year.
- Christmas Music and Caroling: Sing Christmas carols together or play holiday music. My daughters join the Christmas choir at church.
- Holiday Storytime: Read classic Christmas stories or recite holiday poems. My father in law reads the nativity story every year. The kids aren't allowed to touch a gift until the story is completely done.
- DIY Gifts: Create handmade gifts or crafts. My daughters have made gifts since their first Christmas. It wasn't anything fancy but they have always understood that Christmas wasn't about just receiving a bunch of gifts. It helped them to understand the concept of giving.
- Family Game Night: Play board games or card games you already own.
- Neighborhood Light Tour: Walk or drive around your neighborhood to look at Christmas lights.
- Volunteer Together: Spend time volunteering at a local charity or community event.
- Christmas Eve Traditions: Start a special routine, like making hot cocoa and talking about the highlights of the year.
